GEORGETOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT VOICE PROGRAM

The Georgetown Police Department is seeking volunteers to participate in its VOICE Program. This program will involve volunteers making regular telephone contact with the homebound and/or infirmed in order to perform a welfare check and brighten their day. The volunteers will make the telephone calls from the police department, and that is why each volunteer will undergo a limited background check.

Please complete the forms using your computer (you can type on the form), then print them out and turn them in at the front desk of the police department. Once the necessary checks have been performed, there will be an organizational meeting at the department. The public will be contacted through the media at a later date to sign up family members, neighbors or friends to be called by the VOICE Program volunteers.

CITY OF GEORGETOWN WINS 2008 MUNICIPAL ACHEIVEMENT AWARD

Each year the Municipal Association of SC's Achievement Award program recognizes successful and innovative municipal projects that improve the quality of life for citizens and add value to the community by establishing partnerships and building community support.

SUMMARY OF THE WATERFRONT CLEANUP PROJECT

For nearly a decade, the City of Georgetown has conducted an annual river cleanup to collect litter along the City’s historic seaport waterfront. Over the period of a few years, volunteers became overwhelmed with the amount of debris removal needed so the City expanded on the program to include assistance from City employees and equipment, residents, students and several corporate sponsorships. Despite expanding the initiative, the City and its volunteers still could not remove the abandoned boats and other large marine debris left in the water due to the expense and potential liabilities associated with disposal. City officials recognized an opportunity to further expand on the waterfront cleanup project and address navigational hazards and potential environmental pollutants as well. This led to development of the Abandoned Vessel and Marine Debris Removal Project to eliminate the unsightly debris and successfully applied for and received a grant from the SCDHEC and the NOAA/OCRM.

The City embarked on a mission to coordinate efforts and hired a marine contractor responsible for removing identified marine debris in an environmentally safe manner and disposing of the debris in approved landfills. Officials also passed an abandoned vessel and vehicle ordinance that would penalize owners who vacated their boats. The City also worked with the SCDNR and the U. S. Coast Guard during the removal process. In still another effort to expand and improve on the cleanup project, the City decided to “super-clean” the waterfront by partnering with the SCDNR and the SC Grant Consortium. Additional sponsorships and citizen participation increased the success of the waterfront cleanup. These concurrent efforts drastically improved the City’s efforts to conserve and promote one of its most vital assets, the waterfront.

GUIDE TO HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL

Public utility residents of the City of Georgetown have recently received by mail a copy of the brochure Guide to Household Solid Waste Disposal. This brochure contains useful information that will answer questions about proper solid waste disposal in the City such as – curbside pickup schedules, what can be recycled in the City of Georgetown, what will be picked up, and how to put items at the curb.

The City of Georgetown provides curbside pickup of household solid waste on a weekly basis. Remember the ABC’s - Always Bag and Close your garbage and recycling. For curbside pickup, all garbage must be bagged and placed in the city-provided roll-out container. Do not over-fill your roll-out container or put bags beside it. Keep Georgetown Beautiful.

The city does not pick up construction, demolition debris, or roofing shingles. Contractors or property owners are responsible for removal. Examples of construction debris includes - all wood material, bath tubs, sinks, commodes, wood cabinets, sheet rock, cement, masonay materials such as brick, roofing materials including roofing tin, and shingles. Georgetown County drop-off centers allow residents to deposit one truckload per household per day. For more information call the county landfill at 843-545-3463.

According to Chapter 9 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Georgetown, it shall be unlawful for any person to throw, deposit, litter, scatter, or otherwise cause to be placed or left upon any vacant or unoccupied lot or lots, along any street, sidewalk, or other public place within the city, any paper, wastes, roofing shingles, rubbish, leaves, grass clippings, or other trimmings and yard wastes, or garbage of any kind, unless said materials are properly containerized or bagged in such a manner as to facilitate their collection by the Public Works Department. Violation of this Code is subject to punishment by a fine of five hundred dollars ($500) or by imprisonment not exceeding thirty (30) days, or both. Each day the violation continues shall constitute a separate offense.
